You've got me wondering, as I often do in my own work with men, is this just about men? If it's not, then is it also true that life in general... really does work better as a map than a destination?

I'm also reminding myself that a map isn't the terrain. It's just a model. Where we live is what the map tries to simplify. Still, walking the terrain without a map is an unwise choice when we don't know what's ahead. So, let's keep that map handy (and dry).

Fun exploration, Jim. As always.

That's a good thing to wonder about. I don't think it's just about men but I do think a lot of men tend to see things such as self awareness and self improvement differently than a lot of women do. I also think men tend to see 'manhood' is something we arrive at instead of something we practice every day. And that sense of arrival is not good -- even dangerous -- for us. I'm also feeling that the more men I interview, the more I see that our issue is as much to do with how we orient ourselves in our lives. How we decide and how walk down certain paths. Walking that terrain without a map is truly unwise. Thanks for your comments as always.

Right, like enlightenment. I sometimes still imagine it's up ahead. It's right here, and I mostly fail to see it. By "mostly," I mean something like 99.999% of the time.
